The MMR vaccine helps to prevent measles, mumps, and rubella (German measles). Each of these diseases may lead to serious health complications, and in rare cases, can be life-threatening. Both adults and children should get the MMR vaccine as soon as possible to reduce the risk of getting measles, mumps, or Rubella.
Learn about the benefits of the MMR vaccine, the side effects of getting vaccinated, and whether you can take it with other vaccines.
Who Should Get It?
According to the NHS, the recommended ages for the MMR vaccination are:
- First dose: Children 12 to 15 months old
- Second dose: Children 4 to 6 years old
- Unless you have already received the MMR vaccine or have already had all 3 diseases, then adults 18 years or older and born after 1965 should receive one dose
In general, doses should be given a maximum of 28 days apart. It is safe to receive the MMR vaccine at the same time as other vaccines. For example, children 12 months to 12 years of age might receive MMR and varicella in one vaccine dose (MMRV).
MMR Vaccine Side Effects
The MMR vaccine can sometimes cause mild side effects which include:
- A skin rash on your body or where the injection was given
- Redness or soreness at the location of the shot
- Swelling of the glands in the neck or cheeks
- Fever
- Stiffness or pain in the joints
- Seizures
- Pneumonia
Effectiveness
The MMR Vaccine for adults and children is very effective at protecting people against mumps, rubella, and measles. People who have received the MMR vaccination are usually protected for life against measles and rubella however the intensity of mumps protection can diminish over time somewhat. If you are at high risk for mumps, a booster shot may be needed.
Is it Safe to Get the MMR Vaccine with Other Vaccines?
The MMR vaccine can safely be given at the same time as other standard vaccines for children (and adults). Because it is a combination of 3 vaccines in one, children are not put through the pain of getting multiple injections.
