What is Emergency Contraception?

Emergency contraception is used after unprotected sex or when your regular contraception fails, like if a condom splits or you forget to take your pill.

The most commonly known for of emergency contraception is the morning after pill. It works best when taken as soon as possible after sex, but some types can be effective up to five days later. If you think you’ve had a mishap with your contraception it’s important to speak to us as soon as possible so that any emergency contraception you take has the best chance of working.

We can also guide you towards sexual health testing and advise you if you’ve had unprotected sex.

Most people can safely take the morning after pill, but at your appointment the pharmacist will ask you a few questions to make sure it’s the right option for you. We’ll need to know the date of your last period, when you had unprotected sex and ask a few other general health questions. These are all to make sure the emergency contraception we prescribe has the best chance of working.

Going to the pharmacy for emergency contraception is straightforward and confidential. There’s no need to be worried or embarrassed, we’re here to help and what to get you the support you need.

Please note that emergency contraception is not meant to be a regular method of contraception, so if you find yourself needing it often, it’s worth chatting with a healthcare professional about other options.

At the pharmacy we can offer condoms which are simple and effective way to prevent pregnancy and STIs. It’s important to note that if you choose a more long term method of contraception like the pill or an IUD they don’t provide protection against STIs so you may still need to use condoms.

No, you don’t need a prescription. You can get it directly from Miles Pharmacy after a short consultation.

What if I’ve already ovulated—will emergency contraception still work?

The morning after pill works by delaying ovulation, so if you’ve already ovulated, it may not be effective. In this case, the copper coil (IUD) might be a better option, as it works even after ovulation. Speak to us for advice.
