Thailand is regarded by travelers the world over as one of the best countries to visit for its friendly culture, idyllic beaches, bars, and Buddha. With the pandemic entering year 3, Thailand is changing its approach in an effort to reopen its borders for unrestricted international travel.
There are three different pathways to entry: two for vaccinated travelers and one for unvaccinated travelers. You’re still required to take PCR tests on arrival, but the number of tests varies depending on the type of entry scheme.
As of April 1st, whether you’re visiting Thailand under the Test-and-Go, Sandbox, or Alternative Quarantine schemes, and regardless of vaccination status, you’ll no longer need to provide a pre-entry COVID-19 test to enter the country.
If you’re planning to visit Thailand, here’s what you need to know
Thailand travel restrictions for foreigners over the past recent years have been changing so much that it’s hard to keep track. Here are the most up-to-date Thailand travel restrictions 2022 from Thailand Travel Advice & safety:
- Proof of full vaccination or a certificate of recovery from the virus.
- Thailand Pass QR
- Foreigners require Health insurance
- Pre-book and pay for a hotel stay (plus test and transport from airport) at a SHA government-approved hotel (for Day 1 and 5)
- Take an antigen test on Day 5 if staying in Thailand longer than 5 days
- Download and install the MorChana COVID-19 tracking app
Thailand’s Test-and-Go programme for vaccinated travelers
Fully vaccinated tourists from any country can avail themselves of the Test-and-Go program. The (almost) quarantine-free Test-and-Go plan allows visitors to travel to any part of Thailand, provided they get a negative COVID-19 test on the first and fifth day of their visit. Travelers are also required to have COVID-19 insurance of at least £14,000.
Thailand’s Sandbox program for vaccinated travelers
Travelers can also visit Thailand under the Sandbox program. It’s slightly more restrictive and allows fully vaccinated visitors from any country to travel to Thailand, provided they stay in approved locations such as Phuket, Krabi, and Ko Phan-gan for five days before they are free to travel around the rest of the country.
Unvaccinated travelers in Thailand
Unvaccinated tourists can also visit under the Thailand’s Alternative Quarantine program. Those unvaccinated are required to have Covid Insurance of £40,000. They also must quarantine for five days and take PCR tests on days four and five. When the quarantine period is over, travelers will be free to travel domestically.
