Japanese encephalitis is a viral disease that is transmitted by mosquitoes. The virus is found in pigs and birds, however, it is spread to humans through mosquito bites.
It actually can not be passed from one person to another. Surprisingly most people will have mild or no symptoms however the virus can cause severe symptoms and lead to serious long term complications.
Where can I get it?
Last year half of all new cases originated in China, and around three-quarters of all cases were children under the age of 15 years.
High-risk countries also include Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam.
It does depend on what time of year you travel as to the level of personal risk of catching encephalitis. Rainy seasons bring about more mosquitoes and consequently a higher risk.
