What Is Tick-Borne Encephalitis?
TBE is a viral infection that is transmitted through the insect bite of an infected Ixodes tick. TBE affects the central nervous system which can lead to neurological complications and can even be fatal in severe cases.
Tick-Borne Encephalitis Symptoms
The time between TBE exposure and the first symptoms typically appears between 7 to 14 days. Early symptoms of the virus can cause flu-like symptoms.
An advanced stage of TBE can include neurological conditions ranging from mild meningitis to severe encephalitis. The worst cases can lead to paralysis or permanent neurological damage.
How To Avoid Tick Bites
TBE virus infection can be prevented by vaccination and taking precautionary measures to avoid being bitten in areas where TBE infection rates are high.
- Apply DEET insect repellent on your clothes and skin
- Stay on the hiking paths and avoid walking through bushes and tall grass
- Use clothing with light colours so ticks are easier to see and brush off

The first series consists of two vaccinations given a minimum of 14 days apart, followed by a third dose taken 5-12 months later You need to get the first injection at least 1 month before travelling for complete protection.
