Typhoid fever is a serious illness caused by bacteria.
It’s usually spread through contaminated food or water. Symptoms of Typhoid often start one to two weeks after infection and can include a high temperature, headache, general aches and pains, extreme tiredness, cough, and constipation.
As the illness progresses, you might lose your appetite, feel sick, have tummy pain, and experience diarrhoea. Some people may also develop a rash.
Without treatment, typhoid fever can lead to severe complications, so if you think you have it you must seek medical attention.
The typical Typhoid vaccine gives coverage for three years.
When you book your appointment with our travel clinic we’ll let you know if you may need a booster in future .
Even if you’ve been vaccinated, it’s essential to take precautions to prevent typhoid fever.
Only consume bottled water from sealed bottles or water that’s been recently boiled. Avoid ice in drinks, as it can be contaminated.
Steer clear of raw fruits and vegetables unless you’ve washed them in safe water or peeled them yourself. Avoid shellfish, seafood, and salads that might have been washed in unsafe water.
Wash your hands regularly, especially before eating or preparing food to reduce your risk of contracting typhoid fever.
Typhoid fever is more common in areas with poor sanitation and hygiene. High-risk regions include the Indian subcontinent, Africa, South and Southeast Asia, and South America. In the UK, most typhoid cases occur in people who’ve visited India, Pakistan, or Bangladesh. If you’re planning to travel to these areas, especially if you’ll be staying in places with limited sanitation, it’s strongly recommended to get vaccinated.
If you’re not sure whether or not you’ll need the vaccine book a consultation at our travel clinic for advice.
