Who it is for

Who this covers

NHS eligibility Women aged 16 to 64

The NHS pathway for uncomplicated urinary tract infections covers women aged 16 to 64. Men, and women outside that age range, need to see a GP: urinary infections are treated differently and need a different assessment. There is no charge for the consultation. If you are given a medicine, the standard NHS prescription charge applies unless you are exempt.

What is a urinary tract infection?

Bacterial infections of the urinary tract are referred to as urinary tract infections, or UTIs. These include the bladder (cystitis), the kidneys, and the urethra (urethritis). The pharmacist will assess your symptoms with you and check them against the NHS pathway.

What are the signs and symptoms?

Urinary tract infections can have a range of signs and symptoms. These include:

  • Needing to pass urine more often than usual
  • A burning or painful sensation when passing urine
  • Getting up in the night to pass urine more than usual
  • Needing to pee more urgently or suddenly than usual
  • Blood in your urine
  • Pain in the lower abdomen, or in your back just below the ribs
  • Feeling hot, or a high temperature
  • Feeling very cold, with a temperature below 36 degrees Celsius
  • Cloudy looking pee

Your pee may also look dark and smell. If you have no other symptoms, that can simply mean you are not drinking enough fluids.

What to expect

What happens when you come in

  1. Book or walk in

Book online, call 020 8393 1000, or come to the counter. No referral and no GP appointment needed.

  2. A private consultation

The pharmacist will ask about your symptoms in the consultation room and check them against the NHS pathway before treating.

  3. Treatment or advice

If treatment is appropriate, you can be supplied there and then. If it is not, you will get advice on managing the symptoms and be told exactly what to watch for and when to come back. Either way the consultation is recorded and sent to your GP with your consent.
