How long it lasts
Protection builds over about two weeks and lasts the season. The viruses change each winter, so the vaccine is updated every year.
When to have it
Ideally by early December, before flu peaks, but it's still worth having later. We vaccinate until the end of March.
With your COVID vaccine
They can be given at the same appointment, one in each arm. Your private COVID vaccine is £89, or £115 for both.

Side effects, and who should wait

  • Common after the injection

A sore arm for a day or two, and sometimes a slight temperature or aching muscles. They pass on their own.

  • Can it give you flu?

No. The injected vaccines contain no live virus, so they can't cause flu. Feeling a little off-colour for a day is the immune system responding, not an infection.

  • Unwell on the day

A cold is fine. A fever isn't: wait until it has passed and rebook. Tell us and we'll move the appointment.

  • Egg allergy

Most people with an egg allergy can have the flu vaccine, and egg-free vaccines are available. Tell us when you book and the pharmacist chooses accordingly.

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Recommended at any stage of pregnancy, and it protects the baby for the first months of life. Breastfeeding is fine too.

  • Who should ask first

Anyone who has had a severe allergic reaction to a previous flu vaccine or one of its ingredients. Say so when you book and we'll talk it through before anything is given.
