HOW TO PREVENT CHOLERA

Cholera Vaccines

Cholera vaccines are available for people who will be traveling in high-risk areas of Africa, Southeast Asia, and Haiti.

An oral cholera vaccine called Vaxchora is given as a drink in 2 doses (given 1 to 6 weeks apart). It will provide protection against cholera for up to 2 years. Make sure to complete both doses at least a week before traveling.

Cholera vaccines are highly effective, but not 100% guaranteed, so continue to take precautions when traveling with food and water and follow strict hygiene practices.

Five Steps You Can Take to Prevent Cholera

You should always practice good personal hygiene and be diligent about only drinking clean bottled and only eating in sanitary establishments when traveling.

Following these 5 simple steps below can greatly reduce your risk of getting cholera in areas where cholera is common:

1. Only drink and use safe water.

2. Wash hands with warm water and soap frequently

3. Only use clean and sanitary toilets and bathrooms

4. Cook food properly, cover it and eat it hot. Try to avoid fresh vegetables and fruits that cannot be peeled.

5. Clean up safely. Don’t reuse contaminated cleaning rags, always clean with clean cloths and soap or disinfectant.

Cholera Vaccination Services are available at Miles Pharmacy in each of our South London travel clinics which are staffed by vaccine experts who can provide advice about travel vaccinations, malaria prevention, and travel tips to stay healthy.
